What happens to our urban spaces when they stand empty or lose their public function? And what does it take

What happens to our urban spaces when they stand empty or lose their public function? And what does it take for places like the SEZ to once again become vibrant spaces for sports, culture, social interaction, and community?

The Kiosk of Solidarity, together with the “SEZ for Everyone!” initiative and the “Life Instead of Vacancy” campaign, invites you to join the conversation about the future of the SEZ—and, beyond that, about the future of urban development in Berlin that prioritizes the common good.
The event is part of the “Berlin Chooses Life Over Vacancy” campaign for the 2026 Berlin House of Representatives election. Together with initiatives from civil society, we want to highlight the importance of self-organized spaces, social infrastructure, cultural spaces, and urban development focused on the common good for Berlin—and how their future can be secured through policy.

Program (15:00–19:00)

Throughout the day, there will be an open space for discussion, participation, and action:
Mapping vacant properties and initiatives in Berlin
Presentation of the “Vote Against Vacancies” campaign and participating initiatives
Distribution of posters and materials
Open screen-printing workshop—feel free to bring your own textiles or design something on-site.

Talk (18:00) The Future of the SEZ?!

The focus of the evening will be on the question of how the SEZ can be preserved in the long term as an important venue for sports, culture, and community interaction, and how it can be further developed in the interest of the common good. Together, we will discuss the responsibilities of policymakers, property owners, and the local community in this regard, as well as the prospects for the site’s future.
