concept

The festival “…all around the Mäusebunker” is an event dedicated to the creative, cultural and social activation of the open spaces around the Mäusebunker and opening them up to the neighbourhood and urban society. It offers a varied public programme to participate in, discuss and try out.

Urbane Praxis e.V. aims to bring together a network of urban design actors and the neighbourhood to explore artistic and civic impulses for the further development of this iconic site and its surroundings. Over four weekends in September 2024, public discussions, art actions, workshops and performances will take place on site, appealing to both the neighbourhood and urban society.

Topic: Urban wellbeing …all around the mäusebunker

The festival revolves around the theme of urban wellbeing and health, drawing on the history of the building as an animal testing facility, the future development of the neighbouring Benjamin Franklin Campus towards basic health research, as well as the Mäusebunker model procedure, but also concepts such as the WHO Healthy Cities project and the Caring City. Together we would like to discuss, spatialise and experience the factors of urban well-being at the Mäusebunker site.

The weekends are divided into

7.-8.09.2024

Space, circulation, movement …all around the mäusebunker

Physical wellbeing

The first weekend is dedicated to structural and physical training. In other words, on the one hand, the building fabric of the mouse bunker, the handling of the building heritage and questions of the building material cycles. On the other hand, with movement workshops, the themes of appropriating space in a physical way in order to explore the open space and one’s own body in relation to the environment in a new way.

14.-15.09.2024

Emotions, safety, care …all around the mäusebunker

Mental wellbeing

The programme on the second weekend explores emotional and socio-psychological well-being, but also spatial barriers and designs that lead to feelings of insecurity and exclusion. Possible areas of investigation include safer spaces, gender-appropriate open space design, noise and spatial barriers and solidarity-based healthcare.

21.-22.09.2024

Climate justice, co-habitation, nature culture …all around the mäusebunker

Environmental wellbeing

The third weekend takes a closer look at the Mäusebunker as a place for nature culture, co-habitation and climate-friendly open space design along the Teltow Canal – due to the history of the building as well as its proximity to the water and the nature reserve.

28.-29.09.2024

Communities, neighbourhoods, solidarity practices…all around the Mäusebunker

Social well-being

The fourth weekend will highlight the essential importance of meeting spaces for communities and neighbourhoods as potential places for exchange, empowerment and social interaction. The focus here is on community-building and solidarity practices.

Ideas wanted

In addition to the supporting programme, we are looking for ideas for suitable programme items that deal with the location and the theme in an artistic and urban design way.

We are looking for initiatives, collectives, interest groups or individuals who work in their artistic and urban practice at the interface of art, culture, urban development, environment and social issues and would like to get involved locally with the topics described above.

We are looking for ideas on the following points:

  • Interactive model of the Mäusebunker (e.g. 1:10/1:50)

A model of the Mäusebunker will invite visitors to express their needs and ideas for the future development of the building, in the sense of a wish production. The ideas should remain visible or be documented over the course of the festival.

Budget proposals welcome

  • 7/8 September 2024 Participatory building workshop

A participatory building workshop is designed to familiarise participants with self-building practices / reuse of building materials / use of natural building materials / circular economy. The idea is to cooperate with a local organisation, e.g. youth centre/district centre. (Co-operation is not required for the submission of the concept sketch).

Budget: approx. 1000€-1500€ plus material costs if necessary

  • 14/15/09/2024 Gender-appropriate open space design (free format)

The topic of gender-appropriate open space design of the open areas and the green corridor along the Teltow Canal is to be addressed using a free format (city exploration tour, performance, workshop, movement workshop, etc.).

Budget: approx. 500€-1000€

  • 14/15.09.2024 Mobile offer for a district health centre (free format)

The idea of a district health centre as a solidarity-based health service that recognises precarious living and working conditions, discrimination and racism in connection with health is to be examined with visitors at the Mäusebunker site. For example, through a mobile programme and/or in cooperation with a local initiative. (Co-operation is not required for the submission of the concept sketch).

Budget: approx. 500€-1000€

  • 21/22/09/2024 Culture raft and critical Nass

A raft trip along the Teltow Canal (from Tempelhof harbour to the temporary landing stage “Zukunftsstation Mäusebunker”) offers an artistic and discursive programme. At the same time, a Critical Nass invites you to travel with your own watercraft, thereby addressing improved access to water and better water quality.

Budget proposals welcome

  • 21/22.09.2024 Collective cooking event

A collective cooking event and a discursive dinner will invite visitors to discuss the potential of ecological, climate and socially just food production and distribution and to bring ideas for the Mäusebunker site to the table (in the best case, the ideas will be documented).

Cooperation with the local food centre and experts, for example from the Berlin Food Council, is being considered. (Co-operation is not required for the submission of the concept sketch).

Budget: approx. 500€-1000€ plus material costs if necessary

  • Free idea and format

Do you have an idea for an event or spatial installation that suits the location and the project and fits in thematically with one of the theme weekends or deals with the topic of urban well-being independently of the four focal points?

Budget proposals welcome

You can register with this form in German or English until 02 June 2024 with a short concept sketch and references if applicable. If you have any questions, you can contact us at maeusebunker@urbanepraxis.berlin.
