Narrative strategies and methods in urban development

Urban development tasks are always also communicative tasks! But how do you manage to explain your own visions of collaborative urban development in an understandable way? And how do you manage to listen better and give space to the stories of local people? The BBSR’s latest publication ‘Stadt erzählen – Stadt gestalten’ (Telling the City – Shaping the Cit) aims to provide answers to these questions.

Today, urban planning and development take place in contested – sometimes polarised – public spheres in which planning issues escalate and delay the implementation of projects. Narrative strategies and methods can help here. They open up a space for storytelling and listening, visualise ideas and can involve groups that are not usually involved in urban development processes.

This publication aims to provide practical tips and experiences on how narrative strategies and methods can be utilised for urban development. It is based on an in-depth examination of eight example projects as part of the BBSR research project ‘Shaping the city with narratives’, which we implemented as the inter3 Institute.

It can be downloaded here from the BBSR website.
