Outtakes Cinema: Who Owns the Night?
Twilight, Nosferatu, and the rest—where is the queer-feminist perspective on vampire films?
Drawing inspiration from the film *A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night*, this discussion will explore what it means to be a vampire, urban spaces, and the screening location—the former parking deck at Cittipoint—from a queer-feminist perspective, posing the question: To whom does the night belong?
Outtakes Cinema is hosting an open-air screening on a former parking deck at Operation Himmelblick. The film being shown is *A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night* (original version with subtitles) by Ana Lily Amirpour.
Amid deserted streets, neon lights, and shadows, a young woman wearing a chador glides through the night on a skateboard. She is a vampire roaming the streets of the fictional city of Bad City. The film explores a multifaceted examination of fear, threat, and the appropriation of public spaces at night. It tells a story of loneliness, dependency, and power dynamics.
Before the film starts, we invite you to join us for a discussion on the parking deck. The initiatives Critical Entries and Feminist Spaces Collective will offer insights into their work exploring queer-feminist perspectives on the city—sometimes in a very practical way, such as stargazing at Görli, and sometimes on a more linguistic level, through interviews and exhibition formats. Through this, we aim to approach the question cinematically, spatially, and politically: Who owns the night? What power dynamics are at play in our city? And what work do these initiatives do?
In the film, fiction and realistic scenarios blur together. We would like to explore this and discuss a nuanced analysis of the themes portrayed in the film as well as their social implications. We also aim to reflect on the film within the context of current political and social debates.
