Invitation to the opening of the ‘Tower21’ – Youth Pavilion in Berlin-Moabit

A project by YOUNION21

Location:
Birkenstraße underground station (U9), approx. 500 m walk, barrier-free access

Location: Jugendplatz / Unionplatz, Berlin-Moabit
Date: Friday, 11 July 2025
Start: 2:00 pm

What began with workshops, playful research in the urban space, gaming and sketches of ideas with and by
young people became a temporary pavilion construction on the newly founded youth square.
For over 1.5 years, young people from Karame e.V. have been working intensively with the
interdisciplinary collective YOUNION21 – consisting of Karame e.V., Noibau GmbH and
the artist Silke Riechert – on the design of a contemporary youth square
. In workshops, city tours, design exercises and playful
research, they developed the idea of a pavilion that functions as a retreat, meeting point and
place of participation.

The result: Tower21 – a two-storey, temporary pavilion erected on an existing
circular stone surface at the north-eastern entrance to Unionplatz. The
construction made of scaffolding poles is based on donated materials and enables flexible
use: functions such as a punching bag, a mobile phone charging station or benches can be installed or removed as required, depending on
. The upper area offers a quiet
retreat with a roof garden – which can be used for special events.
Since 2019, the space has been actively used by young people from Karame e.V. and the
youth migration service in the neighbourhood. Initial initiatives such as the mobile stage MY
HQ provided space for concerts, political events and activities organised by young people
for young people. The official rededication as a youth square took place in 2024.
Tower21 is now a permanent, visible place for young people to get involved in Moabit.
