Today, participation goes far beyond the involvement of citizens in political life. Has it lost its clout because it has been absorbed into the imperative of almost all social concerns? However, it only ever makes sense in connection with the question “in what”: who participates in what and how? So what does participation stand for in different disciplines and contexts? An approach to the term via the two fields of art and urbanism pursues, with a view to urban practice, its sharpening in the field of tension between participation and involvement.
