ART CITY LAB 2 – NEW SPACES FOR ART – for working and living in Berlin

How can Berlin’s artists be kept in the city?

Of at least 8,000 visual artists in the city, around half are currently looking for affordable studios. The trend is rising, as around 350 affordable studios are lost every year. This demand is offset by ‘only’ 936 subsidised studios and studio flats. The situation is dramatic, time is of the essence! There is a threat of trends like those in London or New York, where artists are largely being displaced to marginalised areas.

The studio commissioner for Berlin and raumlaborberlin, together with the state-owned housing association Gewobag, the private developer Artprojekt and TTI, examined innovative concepts and concrete implementation proposals for Art City Lab 2 in a cooperative process with artists, sustainability banks, cooperatives, senate administrations, members of parliament, scientists and planners in two workshops at Hafenplatz in Kreuzberg in 2018 in order to clarify how affordable space for art production and living can be developed in the city – both in new and existing buildings. The resulting publication summarises the results and is intended to stimulate further discourse.

Art City Lab 2 tries to find alternative, lateral solutions regarding the contemporary housing shortage. How can Berlin’s artists be kept in the city? How does a housing association work with an initiative or a private developer? How do you close the gap between financing needs and funding programs?

How can places for art production have a positive effect on the neighbourhood? The studio commissioner for Berlin and raumlaborberlin developed and discussed these questions together with the state-owned housing association Gewobag, the private developer Artprojekt and TTI in a cooperative process with artists*, sustainability banks, cooperatives, senate administrations, members of parliament, scientists and planners.
