Municipal policy toolbox for a ‘caring city’

‘Put life at the centre!’ demand feminist strike movements worldwide. But how is this possible when the reality is completely different? Municipal and public services of general interest continue to be cut back, the market hardly replaces them and if it does, it does so at high prices. More and more tasks – in particular childcare, education, care, healthcare and assistance – therefore have to be taken on privately and within people’s own four walls. In view of rising rents, this space is also becoming increasingly cramped and insecure. We cannot resign ourselves to this.

But what can be done about the progressive valorisation of life? What could an economy look like that has the well-being of the many as its goal and values all labour? What must institutions look like in which we democratically decide how care work can be organised beyond existing gender roles and in which all needs are given their due? And how can we achieve both concrete improvements in everyday life and initiate a fundamental change in society?
