Since 2018, Koop5 - an alliance of civil society and the public sector - has been working cooperatively and under joint responsibility to develop the area into a public welfare-oriented and mixed-use neighborhood.
Thanks to the efforts of the Haus der Statistik initiative, a group of committed artists, architects, cultural workers and politicians, the planned demolition of the GDR administration building was prevented in 2015. In the existing building and through approx. 65,000 m² of new construction, space is being created for art, culture, social services and education, affordable housing and a new city hall for central and administrative uses. The ground floors of the new neighborhood are intended to serve the common good. The foundation for this is laid in a processual and prototypical manner with the pioneer uses during the planning and construction phase.
The pioneer uses represent the cooperative planning process in practice and offer an active added value for the urban community, in which neighborhood and city-wide needs already find their place on site.
