With its working group Urbane Praxis, the Council for the Arts (Rat für die Künste) launched an initiative, which in 2021 will show the cooperation and action field “Urbane Praxis” with Berlin-based actors in a network of city-wide campus projects. Using examples of various practices, also beyond Berlin, this podcast discusses perspectives and potentials of urban practice and why now is a good time to talk about it.

The current episode is all about:

#23 – Wald vs. Wohnung w/ Initiative Emmauswald und den Berliner Forsten

Do you know the largest forest in Neukölln? It is located on the corner of Hermannstraße and A100, directly behind Emmauskirchhof. A forest has grown here on 3.8 hectares over the last few decades. Completely hidden and almost untouched. But now it is to make way for a housing project. We spoke to Judith König and Lukas Bodelschwingh from the @emmauswald_bleibt initiative and Gunnar Heyne, head of the Berlin Forestry Department, about inner-city woodland.

What actually makes an area a forest? And to what extent are forested areas protected by law? Three percent of Germany’s forest area has died in the past four years alone due to the prolonged drought. All the more reason to focus on Berlin’s remaining forests and secure them for the long term.

Tune in and hug at least one tree this week!
