Off the radar: What can the niche do?
A panel to jointly discuss about the tactics used in the development of
Off the radar is a panel about the potential of niches. Co-speakers are Operation Himmelblick, Pool Potentials, Floating and the Prinzessinengarten Collective.
The event takes place on 3 December at 7 p.m. in the “Lobby”.
Operation Himmelblick points to an unused niche: roofs. Since 2019, the project has been dealing with this potential. Specifically, the roof of a prefabricated building in Leipziger Str. is taken as an example and is being investigated in order to transform it into a green open space for the common good for residents, the neighbourhood and the city public.
While Operation Himmelblick opens roofs, Floating University nurtures a new urban ecosystem in the rainwater retention basin of the former Tempelhof Airport.
Pool Potentials are campaigning for Berlin’s ten summer swimming pools to no longer lie idle for 8.5 months of the year, but to be used seasonally on an interim basis, and the Prinzessinnengarten Collective Berlin is testing on the grounds of the New St. Jacobi Cemetery in Neukölln how abandoned cemetery spaces can be (re)used through community gardening activities.
Instead of relying on commercial space or additional properties, all projects seek out and develop different urban niches and turn them into places of multiple uses.
At Off the radar: What can the niche do? the tactics used for development and their strategies for maintaining a niche are jointly discussed.
