Welcome to Spätifunk! This project explores the social meaning of Spätis – the popular 24/7 late-night shops associated with Berlin’s
Spätifunk Residency

The mini - photo exhibitions are located in the windows of five Spätis. A larger photo exhibition is located at the Gecekondu of Kotti & Co. and a pop - up photo series directly at the entrance of the Dragonerareal. All exhibitions can be seen from outside in public
besucht werden.

The Gecekondu is located at the south side of Kottbusser Tor, at the corner of Admiralstraße (opposite Cafe Südblock) and can be reached by car, public transport (U1/U3/U8 Kottbusser Tor), by bicycle or on foot. Parking is available on Admiral Street, approx.
100m away from the installation.

The Dragonerareal is located directly at the U6 Mehringdamm station. From there it is
150 m to the container.

For directions to Berlin Spätis, please check out Instagram @spaetifunk.berlin

Presentations take place in German spoken language, translation into English spoken language possible. Audioa transcripts in German are available with English translation.

There are no toilets directly at the installation. Alternatives: On the south block across from Gecekondu. Some of the selected Spaetis have toilets but may not be fully accessible (accessible by ramp if necessary)

Natural light (outdoor venue), nature and street sounds, the sounds of other people and programs on site - there is an opportunity to get out of the Event
situation and minimize possible irritants. The exhibitions are in public space, so there will also be passers-by.

At the Späti - exhibitions there is of course the possibility to buy drinks or food in the Späti itself. Gecekondu at Kottbusser Tor is located near many restaurants and Spätis. The Dragonerareal on Mehringdamm also offers a selection of eating and drinking options

The program is not specifically geared towards children. There is no special area for children. The exhibitions are child-friendly, everyone can look at the photos of the exhibitions and/or listen to the interviews.

Welcome to Spätifunk! This project explores the social meaning of Spätis – the popular 24/7 late-night shops associated with Berlin’s urban and cultural cityscape. We trace the origins of the Späti as a state late-night shop for night shift workers in East Germany and examine the complex interplay between migration history, business ownership and the adaptation strategies with which Späti owners move in the political and urban landscape of the city.

If you’re roaming the city between September 5th and 10th, 2023, you might come across our exhibitions in different formats – some in selected Späti windows and one at the Gecekondu at Kottbusser Tor, accessible 24/7. The exhibitions show a visual and auditory documentation of our conversations with Späti owners about their Späti purchase, experiences with the so-called Sunday rule, the ban on outdoor seating, gentrification, confrontations with the regulatory office and the everyday encounters of Späti with their neighborhood. The installations contain QR code that allows you to delve even deeper into the stories behind the images. These codes give you access to interviews with Späti owners who share their personal stories, formative experiences and thoughts with you. Whether you want to listen to the interviews or read the transcriptions is entirely up to you! Make yourself comfortable, grab your favorite snack and a refreshing drink and check out our Spätifunk exhibitions at various locations!

On September 8 between 1:30 and 3 p.m. we also invite you to a pop-up photo series and a short project presentation at the container right at the entrance of the Dragoon Area. We are looking forward to see you there!
